A lot of teams have adopted OpenTelemetry but many are just scratching the surface. OpenTelemetry gives you the building blocks. Teams that succeed are the ones who put thought into structure, governance, and ownership.
Treat telemetry like a product: define what good looks like, who consumes each signal, and how it drives decisions, not just “emit data” and hope.
Use the Collector as a control plane, not a pass-through. Filter, enrich, sample, and route intelligently, and be deliberate about sampling collecting everything isn’t scalable.
Correlate everything. Without correlation IDs and consistent context propagation across logs, metrics, and traces, you’re back to guesswork during incidents.
More telemetry doesn't mean better observability.
Standardize naming conventions, attributes, and tagging strategy from day one. Inconsistent telemetry becomes expensive noise later. Start with critical services, expand deliberately, and continuously review what you collect against what you actually use.
